Kevin Schaefer:

Foreign.

Kevin Schaefer:

We are the priest of the geeks and we are here with another what's New episode where we talk about all things new in the world of geek and pop culture.

Kevin Schaefer:

So we got a lot of topics to talk about today.

Kevin Schaefer:

Very excited.

Kevin Schaefer:

I am one of your hosts, Kevin Schaefer and I'm here today with one of my fellow geekologists, Evan Garcia.

Kevin Schaefer:

Evan, how are you today?

Evan Garcia:

Hello there, Kevin.

Evan Garcia:

I'm doing well, man.

Kevin Schaefer:

Awesome.

Evan Garcia:

Good to see your face.

Evan Garcia:

So let's get rolling.

Kevin Schaefer:

Well, we are going to be talking about number of things today.

Kevin Schaefer:

Among them kind of what's on the radar for the radar for the MCU this year.

Kevin Schaefer:

So we got a couple trailers there to talk about upcoming movie shows.

Kevin Schaefer:

I am going to be discussing the premiere of Severance season two, one of my favorite series right now.

Kevin Schaefer:

So we're looking forward to that.

Kevin Schaefer:

Evan will also talk about Squid Game season two, so.

Kevin Schaefer:

And probably some other potential Star wars news.

Kevin Schaefer:

So we had a lot to cover but very exciting things.

Kevin Schaefer:

But Evan, before we get to that, what are some other things you're geeking out on right now?

Evan Garcia:

I was mainly doing well, well, it's not a show but I've been hooked on the Pokemon Go again.

Kevin Schaefer:

Oh, nice.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, so I've been doing pretty well on that and pretty much whenever I've got time I'm flicking those.

Kevin Schaefer:

Man.

Kevin Schaefer:

I remember when that was like such a big phenomenon and like it was like everyone was doing yes, that was like the big pop.

Evan Garcia:

I took my daughter.

Evan Garcia:

Well, we took our daughter to their grand to her grandparents pool in the 55 and up community.

Evan Garcia:

This was like probably right.

Evan Garcia:

When the app came out a little bit after we were in the pool with the other 55 and up people and they were talking about the Pikachu's that they just got and stuff.

Evan Garcia:

I was just like what is happening?

Evan Garcia:

What is this life?

Evan Garcia:

Like 20 years ago we were the nerds for talking about right.

Evan Garcia:

Right now it's everywhere.

Evan Garcia:

I'm like, when what happened?

Kevin Schaefer:

It is.

Kevin Schaefer:

That's why they just like geek culture pop culture shifted so much.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like Justin Archive that was alone where it's like, yeah, it's the cool thing to be so good.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, like yeah, wild man.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean being a geek is awesome.

Kevin Schaefer:

So yeah, right on.

Kevin Schaefer:

But that, that's cool.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then for me, oh, so there's a Batman prose novel I read recently which I know like sounds kind of like.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah, it's so it's called Batman Resurrection and it's set in the Tim Burton 89 universe.

Kevin Schaefer:

So it's set in between Batman and Batman Returns and partly because the writer, John Jackson mil.

Kevin Schaefer:

He said it then.

Kevin Schaefer:

Partly because the.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't know if you've read any of the Batman 89 or Superman 78 comics that were in that universe as well, but the Batman 89 one takes place after Batman Returns.

Kevin Schaefer:

So this one he wanted to set in that in between period, because it is kind of a.

Kevin Schaefer:

Some time passes in between the first movie and Returns.

Kevin Schaefer:

So this one, yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

And it's all like, it's very well written and like the focus is on Clayface's origin, which is like really cool to imagine specifically in that universe.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, I mean Clayface is one of my favorite characters and they do a great job with his origin there.

Kevin Schaefer:

There's that.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then Hugo Strange is sort of the like mastermind villain and a lot of clay.

Evan Garcia:

Clayface was a animated show, right?

Evan Garcia:

Original.

Kevin Schaefer:

So not an original, but the Animated series kind of solidified his origin because he does date back in the comics to like the 40s.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, but the origin and like the.

Kevin Schaefer:

And specifically like the shape shifting, mutated aspect, all of that combined with the tragic story of him being an actor who's like put aside and like, and the appearances and all that, that whole origin was really imagined in the Animated series.

Kevin Schaefer:

So yes, the version we know really stems primarily from the Animated Series.

Kevin Schaefer:

There have been a lot of different versions of Clayface in the comics over the years.

Kevin Schaefer:

So he does date back a long time.

Kevin Schaefer:

But in his original appearance he was more.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't know if you watched Batman, Caped Crusader, the Animated series that came out last fall on Amazon was really good, but that one is set in the 40s and the way the character looks in that is much closer to his original.

Evan Garcia:

Yes.

Kevin Schaefer:

Okay, so more of a human with like his face and based on kind of like the Bella Lugosi, like horror films at that time.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah, this.

Kevin Schaefer:

But the big monstrous shapeshifter came on later.

Kevin Schaefer:

But he's still one of my favorite characters.

Kevin Schaefer:

And this one portrays him not as a full on villain, but like, I mean he is for a lot of time he's kind of like lured by ego Strange, but without spoilers.

Kevin Schaefer:

He just like becomes more.

Kevin Schaefer:

There's more of an anti hero element there and a really good redemption too.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I.

Kevin Schaefer:

So it's a really good book.

Kevin Schaefer:

I check it out at bookstores.

Kevin Schaefer:

I.

Kevin Schaefer:

I like what they.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, because the author, he did, he's written a Star wars novel, Star Trek, he wrote the Kenobi Novel.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, he did a Kenobi novel.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes.

Evan Garcia:

That was the last.

Evan Garcia:

I think that's the last.

Evan Garcia:

The last Expanded universe book I.

Evan Garcia:

I read before the whole thing.

Kevin Schaefer:

Right, right.

Kevin Schaefer:

And it's still, I think, pretty popular because you can still get a lot of the legacy ones at bookstores and whatnot.

Kevin Schaefer:

So it's a good.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, but, yeah, so definitely recommend that one.

Kevin Schaefer:

It was a lot of fun, but, yeah, sweet.

Kevin Schaefer:

Awesome.

Kevin Schaefer:

Well, I am looking forward to getting into the topics of today.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I think first off, we've got just.

Kevin Schaefer:

We wanted to kind of take a broad look at what's on the radar for the MCU this year.

Kevin Schaefer:

We've got a lot coming up, so.

Kevin Schaefer:

So the first thing is the upcoming Spider man animated series, which, let me double check the title on there, because I.

Kevin Schaefer:

I can't remember if they kept it freshman year or it.

Kevin Schaefer:

Okay.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's called your friendly neighborhood Spider Man.

Kevin Schaefer:

I think Freshman year was like, the original title.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I mean, this one is interesting because originally it was going to be like, freshman year, the first year of the Tom Holland mcu Spider Man.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then it's evolved since.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, have you gotten to check out the trailer yet?

Kevin Schaefer:

They just dropped it a few weeks ago.

Evan Garcia:

I've.

Evan Garcia:

I saw it on silent.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Okay.

Kevin Schaefer:

Nice.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, it's a lot of fun, but, like, I.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't know exactly how it came about to where it went from again set in the MCU timeline to now.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's just very much its own thing.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's a different actor, different setting, but it still, I think, maintains sort of the same premise as freshman year.

Kevin Schaefer:

Envision it to have him like, it's Peter Parker in his early days on his way to becoming Spider Man.

Kevin Schaefer:

He's got very amateur technology and suits.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then the big thing is that it has Norman Osborn as his mentor, voiced here by Colman Domingo.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I'm really excited to see how that plays out.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I think that's part of why it evolved from originally being a prequel to Homecoming to becoming its own thing.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, although it's.

Kevin Schaefer:

Let's see.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

So, like, I think they.

Kevin Schaefer:

But because they wanted to include Norman, they wanted to kind of do their own thing.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's now just become sort of like.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, and all like.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't know if, like, full on alternate universe or just like.

Kevin Schaefer:

But the same.

Kevin Schaefer:

I think it has the same creative team as it originally had.

Kevin Schaefer:

But regardless, I mean, I'm always up for a new Spider man animated series.

Kevin Schaefer:

I really like, the animation style here, it has more of that, like, 3D effect and, you know, seems to be heavily inspired by the spider verse movies in many ways.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I'm excited.

Kevin Schaefer:

What was your impression on the trailer?

Kevin Schaefer:

Even just watching it, the silently, like, without the dialogue.

Evan Garcia:

Right.

Evan Garcia:

Well, I was excited for it.

Evan Garcia:

I'm like, oh, okay, I'll take it.

Kevin Schaefer:

That's what I think.

Evan Garcia:

More.

Evan Garcia:

More new Spider man content is cool.

Kevin Schaefer:

Exactly.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, I, you know, like, again, I excited initially at the prospect of, you know, a Peter on the way to Homecoming, but at the same time, I was kind of thinking, like, okay, that'd be cool.

Kevin Schaefer:

But also, you know, the.

Kevin Schaefer:

The three Tom Holland Spider man movies have really played out, like, an origin and of itself.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, I mean, so I don't necessarily need, like, to fill in that gap in between Civil War and Homecoming, because it's really only a few months there and.

Kevin Schaefer:

And Homecoming was kind of the first where he's working.

Kevin Schaefer:

I think part of it is why they de Away.

Kevin Schaefer:

They, like, deviated away from that is because Tony is obviously more his mentor in those movies and, you know, before he dies.

Kevin Schaefer:

And so, like, it makes more sense to have kind of an alternate version here and imagine, oh, what would it be like if Norman started out as his friend and mentor in similar ways as we've seen Doc Ock do that in comics and in Spider man too.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I think, like, it'll be an interesting take.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I mean, Colman Domingo is, I mean, one of the best actors working today.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's a great voice cast there, but, yeah, I like the style.

Kevin Schaefer:

I like the aesthetic.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm very interested to see where it goes.

Kevin Schaefer:

I put as my little tag here on video, bring back Spectacular Spider man, which I think is still one of the best and, like, criminal, like, not underrated one.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's very beloved by fans, but it only got one season before they canceled that and moved to Ultimate Spider Man.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I would really love to see that show come back on Disney plus at some point.

Kevin Schaefer:

Just because, like, with Disney plus or anything, they can do whatever they want.

Kevin Schaefer:

I would really like to see that one come back at some point.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't.

Kevin Schaefer:

Do you have Evan, like, either that or another favorite Spider man animated series?

Evan Garcia:

Well, the Animated Series, I don't have that much.

Evan Garcia:

That much.

Evan Garcia:

I don't have that much knowledge of any kind of, like, the modern Spider Man.

Evan Garcia:

Like, those.

Evan Garcia:

Like those.

Evan Garcia:

Those.

Evan Garcia:

Those Spider Man PlayStation games looked amazing.

Evan Garcia:

I just, like.

Evan Garcia:

I'm gonna get to it.

Evan Garcia:

Spider verse is great, but that's about my, that's about my reach on Spider man right now.

Kevin Schaefer:

I gotcha.

Kevin Schaefer:

I gotcha.

Kevin Schaefer:

If you have any recommend, I could have any.

Kevin Schaefer:

Give you any recommendations.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, yeah, Spectacular Spider man is great.

Kevin Schaefer:

I grew up on the night in the 90s series, which is never gets old.

Kevin Schaefer:

And like I, I kind of want to introduce my nephews to that next because they got into Spider man through Spidey and his amazing friends, which is quite adorable.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's a really good kids show and a good introduction, but like it's a lot of fun.

Evan Garcia:

Intro is good too.

Kevin Schaefer:

It is, it is.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's a lot of fun.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like so it's a great one for kids, but I think like they're good at like my middle nephew is about to be five and then the other one's about to be four.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I think that'll be a.

Kevin Schaefer:

To start introducing them to like the 90s one.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's not like, I mean it has like Venom in them and stuff like that, but like for the most part it's, you know, still very kid friendly.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I do want to like show them that at some point because that one is a classic.

Kevin Schaefer:

But it's, you know, there's always so much Spider man content out there.

Kevin Schaefer:

If I can recommend any of the comics right now, it would be Jonathan Hickman's Ultimate Spider man run.

Kevin Schaefer:

It is absolutely phenomenal because like that one is like, I don't know how much you know about the ultimate universe in the current one, but it's all alternate timeline type stuff.

Kevin Schaefer:

So it's very different versions of the characters you know and love.

Kevin Schaefer:

So in like this story, Peter is married to MJ, they're in their 30s, they have two kids.

Kevin Schaefer:

Ben Parker is still alive, May is not, and Ben is working with J.

Kevin Schaefer:

Jonah Jameson.

Kevin Schaefer:

And so it's a fascinating dynamic.

Kevin Schaefer:

They just do all these different incarnations of the characters.

Kevin Schaefer:

The art is phenomenal.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's such a well crafted story.

Kevin Schaefer:

So if you're itching for like a new Spider man story, I would really pick up that first trade.

Kevin Schaefer:

It is phenomenal.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I mean there's plenty out there.

Kevin Schaefer:

But.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah, this one, your friendly, your friendly neighborhood Spider man looks like a ton of fun.

Kevin Schaefer:

I love the title.

Kevin Schaefer:

That's of course just classic and I'm really excited to see that come out.

Kevin Schaefer:

So that's first on the radio that actually premieres next week on January 29th.

Kevin Schaefer:

Okay.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I don't know if they're doing like an episode at a time or how long is it, but it looks Like a ton of fun.

Kevin Schaefer:

So that'll be the first big MCU project of the year.

Kevin Schaefer:

So looking forward to that.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then the really big one after that is in February.

Kevin Schaefer:

I have my tickets.

Kevin Schaefer:

That's my Valentine's Day plans with friends.

Kevin Schaefer:

Is Captain America Brave New World?

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm very excited about.

Kevin Schaefer:

There is that poster you've got.

Kevin Schaefer:

Harrison Ford is now Red Hulk.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm very excited for this.

Evan Garcia:

I can't believe we live in a world where we can say that Harrison Ford is the freaking Red Hulk.

Evan Garcia:

Like, holy moly.

Kevin Schaefer:

What's really hilarious is like in typical Harrison Ford fashion, like he was asked a few years ago, like when they.

Kevin Schaefer:

When he got caught because for those who don't know, like, he took over the role of Thunderbolt Ross after William Hurt died.

Kevin Schaefer:

And you know, so you knew he was gonna have a prominent role in the movie, but I think it was a journalist asked him like, so are we gonna see any Red Hulk in the movie?

Kevin Schaefer:

He's like, what's that?

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't know.

Evan Garcia:

The best.

Kevin Schaefer:

But I'm very excited for this one.

Kevin Schaefer:

What's kind of your background with.

Kevin Schaefer:

I like with Sam Wilson as a character or like, did you get to see Falcon Wonder, the Soldier?

Kevin Schaefer:

Like what.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, just the.

Evan Garcia:

Just the what?

Evan Garcia:

They've.

Evan Garcia:

Just what the.

Evan Garcia:

Sorry, just what the MCU has put out.

Evan Garcia:

Like the.

Evan Garcia:

The.

Evan Garcia:

The Winter Soldier and the main films and stuff like that.

Evan Garcia:

Which.

Evan Garcia:

The.

Evan Garcia:

The.

Evan Garcia:

The.

Evan Garcia:

The Winter Soldier was all right.

Evan Garcia:

It was.

Evan Garcia:

I felt it was a little weak.

Evan Garcia:

I felt it tried to take some swings and they were kind of misses.

Evan Garcia:

But it was good in the sense of.

Evan Garcia:

It helped to flesh out the limb between.

Kevin Schaefer:

Right.

Evan Garcia:

Of.

Evan Garcia:

Of.

Evan Garcia:

Of why this film even exists, you know.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's like the post endgame where they're.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I mean, I do agree that it's ambitious and like not every storyline quite stuck the landing.

Kevin Schaefer:

But I actually.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean there.

Kevin Schaefer:

I know that show was like good as a little bit.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like I really enjoyed it.

Kevin Schaefer:

I have a cap Sam Wilson figure on my desk.

Kevin Schaefer:

And like, I love that suit and I love how comic accurate it is.

Evan Garcia:

It is so good.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I really love Sam's speech at the end of the show.

Kevin Schaefer:

There were a lot of highlights for me in that series.

Kevin Schaefer:

And like.

Kevin Schaefer:

And especially what they do was Carl Lumblies character, which is like kind of like a sort of a cut from the comics that.

Kevin Schaefer:

A deeper cut that I was really glad they brought in that character.

Kevin Schaefer:

And it has to.

Kevin Schaefer:

With his.

Kevin Schaefer:

Think with his nephew.

Kevin Schaefer:

Maybe like a Young Avengers tie.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I Liked a lot of things it set up.

Kevin Schaefer:

I thought it was still really well done show.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, there were some, like, again, storylines that, like, they maybe could have fleshed out a little more.

Kevin Schaefer:

But I really like the dynamic between Sam and Bucky as both of them have different relationships to Steve and are, like, worlds apart, literally, because Bucky comes from a different time period and all this stuff.

Kevin Schaefer:

And, like.

Kevin Schaefer:

But they both have this intimate friendship with Steve and our great successors.

Kevin Schaefer:

And so I like the dynamic between them a lot.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, that.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

Kind of like.

Evan Garcia:

Kind of like, I kind of saw a.

Evan Garcia:

They kind.

Evan Garcia:

They were kind of teasing if Bucky should be.

Kevin Schaefer:

Exactly.

Evan Garcia:

But then.

Evan Garcia:

But then.

Evan Garcia:

But then I liked how they went in the sense that.

Evan Garcia:

That.

Evan Garcia:

That Assam was the only one that that could be it.

Evan Garcia:

Like, they, they.

Evan Garcia:

They made them fill the boots real Well, I thought.

Kevin Schaefer:

I 100 agree.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I just think, like, because in the comics, both of them do become Cap at different points.

Kevin Schaefer:

And, like, I mean, everyone's Bucky, but, like, I just think Bucky especially, like, what they've done with his story as the Winter Soldier, it makes so much more sense to keep him in that role.

Kevin Schaefer:

And, like, man, like, now we've got the Thunderbolts movie coming up, too.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I think that I'm really excited for because, like, that sort of looks like Marvel's answer to Suicide Squad.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I just like him as Winter Soldier more than, like, Sam.

Kevin Schaefer:

I, like you said, he is just destined to fill the Captain America mantle and be Steve's successor.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I think that that show just makes the perfect case why.

Kevin Schaefer:

And now with this movie, I really like the dynamic of, okay, like, Brave New World.

Kevin Schaefer:

Ross is president.

Kevin Schaefer:

There is obviously corruption.

Kevin Schaefer:

It sets it up like a Mission Impossible movie.

Kevin Schaefer:

And, you know, Cap is going to have to oppose the administration directly.

Kevin Schaefer:

And they're.

Kevin Schaefer:

You know, there are echoes of civil war there, but it's still a new direction.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm really excited for this movie.

Kevin Schaefer:

I know.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, Superman is still.

Evan Garcia:

I'm excited.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Oh, I was gonna say Superman is still my, like, number one anticipated superhero movie of the year, but I'm really stoked for this one.

Evan Garcia:

Right.

Evan Garcia:

Same.

Evan Garcia:

And I'm excited for.

Evan Garcia:

How does he fight the Red.

Kevin Schaefer:

Exactly.

Evan Garcia:

He's just.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes.

Evan Garcia:

Unless he took the super serum from.

Evan Garcia:

From the guy from the show.

Evan Garcia:

From the other old guy.

Evan Garcia:

So I don't know.

Evan Garcia:

You know, it's like, I want to see how creative they get in that fight.

Kevin Schaefer:

Exactly.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Oh, I agree.

Kevin Schaefer:

Because I mean, like.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, exactly.

Kevin Schaefer:

He's not a super Soldier.

Kevin Schaefer:

He's got the technical, technological resources and the military background.

Kevin Schaefer:

But still, when you're fighting a Hulk, you gotta have, like, some.

Kevin Schaefer:

So you better have, you know, some resilience and a strategy there.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I agree.

Kevin Schaefer:

I.

Evan Garcia:

Because it can do it all day.

Kevin Schaefer:

Exactly.

Kevin Schaefer:

Right, right.

Kevin Schaefer:

Exactly.

Kevin Schaefer:

And, like, I mean, from the trailer, it looks to be like they're going in the more visceral, thriller direction.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I know that they don't want to make it, like, super campy.

Kevin Schaefer:

So, yeah, I'm really excited to see how that plays out, but.

Kevin Schaefer:

And you've also got John Carlo Esposito as another main villain who we don't know much about yet.

Kevin Schaefer:

But I'm, you know, like, I.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't freak out, but I actually got to meet him at a con ago.

Kevin Schaefer:

He was awesome.

Kevin Schaefer:

The nicest guy.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I'm.

Kevin Schaefer:

Now, it's pretty cool watching the trailer be like, hey, I know him, you know, but.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, but.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

So this one I'm definitely excited for.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I just, you know, I mean, we can't really.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'd be remiss if I didn't talk about just, like, what a hectic time it is for our country right now.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I think, like, a Captain America movie that tackles themes like this could not be more relevant.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I think it'll be.

Evan Garcia:

I am still wondering how they're going to do that.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, that's going to go.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, they were.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm sure the script was locked, like, well before the election, but nonetheless, like, whether they were going to know the outcome or not.

Kevin Schaefer:

All of those themes of what we're dealing with now were still very prevalent during the making of this.

Kevin Schaefer:

So you can't.

Kevin Schaefer:

And especially having a black Captain America in which they cackled a lot of the racial discrimination and themes in the series, I have no doubt that that will be a theme here as well.

Evan Garcia:

Which the mainstream audience probably didn't see.

Evan Garcia:

So let's see how the reaction is going to be.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes, exactly.

Kevin Schaefer:

Exactly.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I'm.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, I am all rooting for Sam.

Kevin Schaefer:

I love.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I love Anthony Mackie, so I'm very excited for this one.

Kevin Schaefer:

But.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, so I'm sure we will do a review once the movie comes out Again, that is my Valentine's Day plan, so.

Kevin Schaefer:

Very excited for it.

Kevin Schaefer:

But, yeah, so that one I'm excited for.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then.

Kevin Schaefer:

But probably my most.

Kevin Schaefer:

I would say after my most anticipated Marvel project this year has got to be Daredevil even more.

Kevin Schaefer:

So they.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, of course, I'm So Fantastic Four, but we haven't seen a trailer yet.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like I said, Thunderbolts looks really good, but Daredevil is my guy again, to brag a little.

Kevin Schaefer:

I've gotten.

Kevin Schaefer:

I got to meet last year Charlie Cox, John Bernthal, and Deborah Anwal.

Kevin Schaefer:

So that was pretty amazing.

Evan Garcia:

You survived.

Kevin Schaefer:

I did.

Kevin Schaefer:

I know I didn't pass.

Kevin Schaefer:

Pass out, especially with the latter and not gonna have a big crush on her.

Kevin Schaefer:

And she was.

Kevin Schaefer:

And she's awesome.

Kevin Schaefer:

But, like, all three of them were awesome.

Kevin Schaefer:

They were just, like, nicest people and, like.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

So now I've met Daredevil, Punisher, and Karen Page.

Kevin Schaefer:

It was pretty awesome.

Kevin Schaefer:

But.

Kevin Schaefer:

But Daredevil has always been like.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, I love Spidey, but like, Daredevil even more so.

Kevin Schaefer:

Just like the stories and the character himself has always been my favorite Marvel character.

Kevin Schaefer:

I love the, you know, the fade themes in it being that they have never shied away from his Catholic roots and how that plays into his philosophy and to his becoming a superhero.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then also, you know, just as Batman lives the double life as a philanthropist and.

Kevin Schaefer:

And.

Kevin Schaefer:

And vigilante superhero Daredevil, also, Matt Murdock is the lawyer and superhero who kind of knows both sides of Lala, and he does everything to, you know, stand up for justice and to punish evildoers.

Kevin Schaefer:

And he has his code.

Kevin Schaefer:

And, you know, the Daredevil show, I think what I love about it most before we get into Born Again, with the three seasons we got originally on Netflix, now they're on Disney, is they went through a lot of creative changes there with showrunners.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, Steven Tonight was the showrunner of the first season, and before that, Drew Goddard created it.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then there was Doug Petrie, and Marco Ramirez did season two, and they did the Defenders, and then Eric.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm gonna have to look up his name in a second, I want to put it.

Kevin Schaefer:

But.

Kevin Schaefer:

But there's another guy who did, who had come from Arrow, who did Daredevil season three, and I was really impressed.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes.

Kevin Schaefer:

So with all the showrunner changes, it really comes together as quite a cohesive show, which is really impressive.

Kevin Schaefer:

You don't get that a lot because, like, I mean, you think about, like, Walking Dead, you can tell how much, like, creative difference there is, like, when they change showrunners, like, quite regularly.

Kevin Schaefer:

So that's one of the things I love about the show is just there is, like, really creative.

Kevin Schaefer:

You know, Eric Olsen did season three, but there's really, like, creative consistency there, which I really appreciated.

Kevin Schaefer:

But, yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

So when they announced Born Again.

Kevin Schaefer:

You know, it went through multiple things.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, originally they said it was going to be a full reboot.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm really glad that it's not.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, it's still a reboot in a sense of.

Kevin Schaefer:

Okay, we haven't had the main series in a while, but I'm really glad that it is going to be in the same continuity.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm sure there will stop to be kind of like, intros and, you know, the Premiere will feel more like a pilot, which I'm okay with.

Kevin Schaefer:

But I'm really glad that it's building on the narrative before because.

Kevin Schaefer:

Especially because season three leaves it on a cliffhanger with Bullseye's origin.

Kevin Schaefer:

Anyway, he wakes up in the end.

Kevin Schaefer:

There's a lot there.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then, like, with Karen, Foggy and Matt kind of rebuilding their firm, there's a lot that they established there.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm glad that that's not getting washed away.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I.

Kevin Schaefer:

But, yeah, they dropped the Born Again trailer.

Kevin Schaefer:

Sorry, I've been rambling here.

Kevin Schaefer:

So what are your thoughts on it?

Kevin Schaefer:

What's your background with the character Evan?

Evan Garcia:

With my.

Evan Garcia:

With the character of Daredevil?

Evan Garcia:

n Affleck version back in the:

Evan Garcia:

I was like, who's this red guy with sticks?

Evan Garcia:

And then that movie was.

Evan Garcia:

Was that movie.

Evan Garcia:

And then I was like, okay, cool.

Evan Garcia:

Okay.

Kevin Schaefer:

Not the best intro to the character, but yes.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

So.

Evan Garcia:

And then when the Netflix show came out and it was like the side project for the mcu, you know, it was like a.

Evan Garcia:

It was kind of.

Evan Garcia:

At least I felt in my circles, I was in, like, it was a novelty.

Evan Garcia:

Like, oh, they're doing Netflix or something.

Evan Garcia:

That's cool.

Evan Garcia:

Because they were doing the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Evan Garcia:

but this is Netflix.

Evan Garcia:

Like, oh, okay.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

So.

Evan Garcia:

And that was a special time for me because I remember watching that series when.

Evan Garcia:

As it was coming out or as it came out that first season.

Evan Garcia:

And I remember.

Evan Garcia:

I remember feeding our newborn and watching it while she was eating on those late night feedings and stuff like that.

Evan Garcia:

So I have a little special.

Evan Garcia:

That has a special place in my heart.

Evan Garcia:

And I loved it.

Evan Garcia:

I loved it.

Evan Garcia:

The whole series was fantastic.

Evan Garcia:

It was gritty and dark and it was.

Evan Garcia:

That a tall way scene is unforgettable.

Evan Garcia:

But then.

Evan Garcia:

But then after that, I was excited where they left off in season three.

Evan Garcia:

Like, they kind of tied it up in a bow.

Evan Garcia:

But like you said with.

Evan Garcia:

With.

Evan Garcia:

With Bullseye, they.

Evan Garcia:

They left some strands and I wasn't.

Evan Garcia:

I was satisfied.

Evan Garcia:

Satisfied with the show.

Evan Garcia:

And then when I heard that this was coming back, and then when they said that it's gonna be a continuation of it, I said, perfect, please, please, and thank you.

Evan Garcia:

And that they were bringing back everybody, I was like, good, good.

Evan Garcia:

Because, man, that, that scene, that, that scene, the.

Evan Garcia:

Where Kingpin decapitates that guy with a car door, like they had one of those every season.

Evan Garcia:

And I was like, okay, so what is gonna be the next big violent thing?

Evan Garcia:

You know, it's like, I can't wait to see how creative they get and see if they try to top that hallway scene, which I thought was so cool, which they did in every season after that.

Evan Garcia:

So it was amazing.

Kevin Schaefer:

They set the bar so high and then they just kept getting better.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, action wise, it's so visceral.

Kevin Schaefer:

And, and what I love about this trailer is like, you know, like, you expect to be like all action stuff, but a lot of the trailer is Matt and Kingpin talking there in the cafe.

Kevin Schaefer:

And it just builds up the tension even more because I.

Kevin Schaefer:

Did you get to watch Echo last year?

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I, I enjoyed that one a lot.

Evan Garcia:

And like, that was.

Kevin Schaefer:

If anything, I wanted it to be a little longer, but I did really enjoy it.

Kevin Schaefer:

And what I, you know, if you remember in the post credits scene in that one, they set it up as Fisk gonna run for mayor of New York.

Kevin Schaefer:

So.

Kevin Schaefer:

Which is just like, yeah, he's gonna have.

Evan Garcia:

That's what we see him now.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

So he's gonna have more power than ever before.

Kevin Schaefer:

I cannot wait to see how that unfolds.

Kevin Schaefer:

And like I said, you bring Punisher back, you've got Karen and Foggy and like he's out.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, I'm so glad that the cast is back because no one else really can play these characters.

Kevin Schaefer:

He's just perfectly gas across the border with Vincent D'Onfrio is Fisk.

Kevin Schaefer:

Charlie Cox is Matt.

Kevin Schaefer:

John Brenthal as Punisher.

Kevin Schaefer:

Deborah and Wool as Karen.

Kevin Schaefer:

Eldon Henson as Foggy.

Kevin Schaefer:

They're all just so impeccably cast.

Kevin Schaefer:

They look so much like in the comics and I love what they bring to the characters.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I'm just so glad to see all the back together along with looks like new characters and yeah, I cannot wait for this one.

Kevin Schaefer:

So this comes in March, but what.

Evan Garcia:

You said, what you said.

Evan Garcia:

But I would like to add.

Evan Garcia:

I forgot just hit me now.

Evan Garcia:

And I, and I had to.

Evan Garcia:

To.

Evan Garcia:

I looked them up.

Evan Garcia:

The, the, the.

Evan Garcia:

The directors of this is Justin Benson and I didn't know about them until I did A episode with Will just a few weeks when I.

Evan Garcia:

Wow.

Evan Garcia:

A few months ago now on the Endless.

Evan Garcia:

On their film the Endless.

Evan Garcia:

And I was blown away.

Evan Garcia:

And I love their style.

Evan Garcia:

I've seen in a few of their things since then.

Evan Garcia:

And they have that independent, independent auteur, artsy, but not too artsy kind of style.

Evan Garcia:

And I was.

Evan Garcia:

I'm so excited to see what they did because they did Moon Knight.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes.

Evan Garcia:

And that was Chef Kiss.

Evan Garcia:

So I'm super excited about this.

Kevin Schaefer:

I didn't even know that.

Kevin Schaefer:

That's a great point because I.

Kevin Schaefer:

I remember them doing Moon Night.

Kevin Schaefer:

I need to re.

Kevin Schaefer:

Watch the Endless because that is a great movie and I like it like that.

Kevin Schaefer:

That's one of the best.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, because you have those kind of like, you know, cold sci fi, mystery kind of things.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm like, go anywhere but like it.

Kevin Schaefer:

It is wild what is going on.

Kevin Schaefer:

And.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I love when.

Kevin Schaefer:

Because that is one thing.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, I mean, I know Marvel can get criticized for having a similar style across the border, but, like, they do really a good job of finding more indie directors and filmmakers of across the spectrum of, like, style and really do give them projects that I think correspond with their styles and with the aesthetic.

Kevin Schaefer:

Stand for.

Evan Garcia:

I wanted to.

Evan Garcia:

This is a topic I wanted to bring up last time when we talked about creature commandos and how that was like, that was.

Evan Garcia:

That was totally James Gunn.

Evan Garcia:

Right.

Evan Garcia:

And what.

Evan Garcia:

It seems like what.

Evan Garcia:

What the new D.C.

Evan Garcia:

eU is doing.

Evan Garcia:

They are going that way of.

Evan Garcia:

They are letting the directors and the writers probably too, but Shine.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes.

Evan Garcia:

Can see what they do.

Evan Garcia:

And then they fit it into the canon of what they're doing.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes.

Evan Garcia:

Because.

Evan Garcia:

Because I think that it's interesting because what Marvel's done is.

Evan Garcia:

Sure, we've had like, these, these, these.

Evan Garcia:

These directors.

Evan Garcia:

And then we had.

Evan Garcia:

Who was ANT Man.

Kevin Schaefer:

I forgot Edgar Wright was originally gonna do it.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then like.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, there's a whole story there.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, he was active for a long time and then u.

Kevin Schaefer:

And.

Kevin Schaefer:

But, but yes.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, you very like auto sign and then the Russo brothers, of course.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, they have very much their own.

Evan Garcia:

Right.

Evan Garcia:

But they still have the Marvel field.

Evan Garcia:

Exactly.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes.

Evan Garcia:

They still submit to the Marvel field.

Kevin Schaefer:

Right.

Evan Garcia:

Whereas it looks like DC is going to be kind of all over the place.

Evan Garcia:

Which is kind of cool.

Evan Garcia:

Which.

Evan Garcia:

I like how we're seeing the two different versions.

Kevin Schaefer:

That's a really good point.

Kevin Schaefer:

I.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I would very much.

Kevin Schaefer:

Because, you know, like, I know there hasn't been a ton of directors announced yet for DC projects.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, they have Ones in development and like, kind of ran and I think he got it specifically, you know, emphasize that it's going to be very writer driven and like, they're not green light anything official until a script is locked, which I think is a really smart approach too.

Kevin Schaefer:

But, you know, just a lot of studios in general could benefit from that approach.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah, I mean, like, because, you know, Mike Flanagan wrote the Clayface movie with that green, which got Greenland, which I hope that means I'll direct it to, because my Flanagan is very much.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, when you see a Mike Flanagan shower movie, you know, it's him.

Kevin Schaefer:

So.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, I agree.

Kevin Schaefer:

That would be really cool.

Kevin Schaefer:

But that is a really good point.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, it's like, yes, they.

Kevin Schaefer:

You have like a wide range of cricket air.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, it's like you watch Thor Ragnarok.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's like, you know, that's Taika Waititi.

Kevin Schaefer:

But nonetheless, it's still, like you said, has like, the Marvel tenants within it that are required.

Kevin Schaefer:

So.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, that's a really good point.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, but.

Kevin Schaefer:

But that's very exciting that they are taking on Born Again.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm very excited.

Kevin Schaefer:

If anything, I.

Kevin Schaefer:

The only thing is, like, I think it's like less episodes than it was original.

Kevin Schaefer:

It was originally slated for, like, I think like 18 or more, which I would love that.

Kevin Schaefer:

But like, okay, let me.

Evan Garcia:

I wanted to bring this up because I.

Evan Garcia:

I hate this.

Evan Garcia:

Seven, eight.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

Come on, guys.

Evan Garcia:

When the first Daredevil seasons were coming out, they were like 12 and 13.

Evan Garcia:

I think I was like, that's perfect.

Evan Garcia:

That's a Perfect.

Evan Garcia:

It's not 22.

Evan Garcia:

22 episodes where there's a bunch of filler and it's not less where you want more.

Evan Garcia:

That sweet spot was like:

Evan Garcia:

They were about an hour, maybe 45 minutes each, which is fine.

Evan Garcia:

I was like that.

Evan Garcia:

That.

Evan Garcia:

That's where we need to go.

Evan Garcia:

Although, wait, I don't like this.

Kevin Schaefer:

Let me look here.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm on IMDb right now.

Kevin Schaefer:

Let's see.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, it's.

Kevin Schaefer:

Let's see, let's see.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, I know.

Kevin Schaefer:

Oh, it looks like.

Kevin Schaefer:

Because I was like, it looked like it had 18 episodes, but it looks like it.

Kevin Schaefer:

That's if they do a season two.

Kevin Schaefer:

But it looks like right now it's waiting for like nine.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

So, okay, we'll see.

Kevin Schaefer:

But.

Kevin Schaefer:

Oh, I.

Kevin Schaefer:

I totally agree though, because it really.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, Like, I.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm also not a fan of like, unless it's like a really a limited series or something like that.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, give it room to breathe.

Kevin Schaefer:

That's why it's a series, you know, I mean.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I agree, like, 13 was a perfect form because, like, that way you eliminate, like, you're not gonna typically gonna have filler episodes, but it's enough time to really digest the story, to flesh out the characters.

Kevin Schaefer:

Because, like, you look at season one of Daredevil, Kingpin didn't show up until about, I think, like, episode three or four.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, it gave time to really introduce Matt, introduce Karen, introduce Foggy, introduce the world, and then build up to the, you know, war between Daredevil, Kingpin, flesh out, you know, other supporting characters, have other villains.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, it took its time and it also wasn't too long, but it wasn't rushed.

Kevin Schaefer:

So.

Kevin Schaefer:

That is a good point, but.

Kevin Schaefer:

But nonetheless, I'm just happy for more Daredevil again, one of my favorite characters.

Kevin Schaefer:

And yeah, I was.

Kevin Schaefer:

I've been re.

Kevin Schaefer:

Watching the show and Punisher as well.

Kevin Schaefer:

So very cannot wait for this one.

Kevin Schaefer:

Definitely my most anticipated MCU project of the year, so I would have to say so myself.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, right on.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, like, I mean, of course I'm excited for Drastic 4, but I need to see a trailer that's this year.

Kevin Schaefer:

This year, man.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, dude, it's gonna be like, yeah, Movies this year are.

Evan Garcia:

I know, right?

Kevin Schaefer:

The movies this year are Captain America Thunderbolts, which we've got trailers for, and then Fantastic Four, which Fantastic Four is currently set to debut two weeks after Superman.

Kevin Schaefer:

So.

Kevin Schaefer:

Which I'm curious to see.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, and I'm wondering if, like, they might delay.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't know.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, I get the, like, incentive.

Kevin Schaefer:

I've, like, wanting to kind of compete, like, friendly, wise.

Kevin Schaefer:

But also it seems like it'd be better to, like, release it either later in the summer or even as a fall release.

Kevin Schaefer:

Because typically the past years, like, they've done like, a early in the year, like around February, then kind of a late spring, early summer, and then a fall release.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, they, like.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like the la.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, this:

Kevin Schaefer:

So we only got Deadpool then, but the year before that, they had.

Kevin Schaefer:

We had, let's see, Ant man, the Wasp, Quantumania, Guardians 3, and the Marvels.

Kevin Schaefer:

And they were.

Kevin Schaefer:

It was like February, May and November.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I like that kind of spread out there.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah, yeah, so.

Kevin Schaefer:

And also, we got Joshua popping out on the chat here, says also, like, oh, he likes the 5 Davis season 2.

Kevin Schaefer:

Just as long as it takes a show to tell the story that the writers want to tell, the writers should have all the say in how long their series needs to go.

Kevin Schaefer:

I 100 agree there.

Evan Garcia:

I think it's like writers should have that priority.

Evan Garcia:

Yes.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's just like.

Kevin Schaefer:

So if it tells the story once you.

Kevin Schaefer:

In this amount of time, great.

Kevin Schaefer:

You know, that's.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

But like, I.

Kevin Schaefer:

I just.

Kevin Schaefer:

But like I said, like Echo, I think could have benefited from an extra episode or two.

Kevin Schaefer:

Maybe like it was.

Kevin Schaefer:

It felt like a sort of a long movie to have because I think it was only like five or six episodes maybe, and I wanted a little more there.

Kevin Schaefer:

So it just depends, like project.

Kevin Schaefer:

Project.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Joshua, we love you too.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes, yes.

Kevin Schaefer:

Glad you are enjoying.

Kevin Schaefer:

So, yeah, those are three of the big mcu, I guess, just like a little else.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like what's coming up this year.

Kevin Schaefer:

So there's the movies.

Kevin Schaefer:

I know the.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't know if it's World of Wakanda or Eyes Wakanda.

Kevin Schaefer:

If that's an animated series coming later this year.

Kevin Schaefer:

We don't know any story details there, but I'm just excited.

Kevin Schaefer:

One of the main reasons I'm excited there is Mark Bernardin is a writer on it, man, I'm excited to see.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't know if you know him from Kevin Smith and his podcast.

Kevin Schaefer:

He's been a TV writer for a while, but he's an entertainment journalist turned screenwriter and him and Kevin Smith host Fat Man Beyond.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I'm very excited for that.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, I.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm all for more Wakanda, more Black Panther Universe, so I'm really excited to see what that entails.

Kevin Schaefer:

There's also gonna be Marvel Zombies, which I'm really excited for, because that was one of the best episodes of what this year too.

Evan Garcia:

Okay.

Kevin Schaefer:

There's a lot this year.

Kevin Schaefer:

In some ways it seems like it might be like.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't want to say like too much, but also, like, you know, I do like to breathe.

Evan Garcia:

Marvel does it well.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, Marvel floods the.

Evan Garcia:

They flood the Their ways.

Evan Garcia:

But.

Evan Garcia:

But I think they do it well.

Evan Garcia:

Like, Phase four had its ups and downs, but I think overall the output was a lot.

Evan Garcia:

But it was pretty good.

Evan Garcia:

It was pretty good.

Evan Garcia:

And they trust them now.

Kevin Schaefer:

That's fair.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

With.

Evan Garcia:

With Lucasfilm, I think that's.

Evan Garcia:

Different story.

Evan Garcia:

I think they need to pull back a little bit.

Kevin Schaefer:

We will get into that too.

Evan Garcia:

Exactly.

Evan Garcia:

Exactly.

Kevin Schaefer:

Because, yeah, the only other.

Kevin Schaefer:

So we got all that.

Kevin Schaefer:

And the only other show is Ironheart is set for this year as well, which, like, she was introduced in Black Panther 2.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I'm excited to see what they'll do there.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Evan Garcia:

I love that.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Sweet.

Kevin Schaefer:

So a lot of good Marvel stuff coming out.

Kevin Schaefer:

You know, if you're watching right now or you're listening to this later, pipe in on the comment section or on YouTube or, you know, jump in on Discord.

Kevin Schaefer:

We would love to hear from you, what you're excited about.

Kevin Schaefer:

Anything we missed there?

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

So really cool.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I think that anything else you want to say on Marvel stuff before we move on to the next subject?

Evan Garcia:

None of it.

Evan Garcia:

You made me super excited that I didn't realize that much was coming up.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

I think especially because last year, I mean, we had some shows, but since we only got one movie because of the effects of the strikes, now they're kind of making up for that.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, right on.

Evan Garcia:

Well, let's move on to yours.

Kevin Schaefer:

Okay.

Evan Garcia:

Because I've been wanting to do it, but I have not been the bullet on.

Evan Garcia:

On the Apple TV plus.

Kevin Schaefer:

So this is the sole reason.

Kevin Schaefer:

Oh, man.

Kevin Schaefer:

This is the sole reason I resubscribed to Apple.

Kevin Schaefer:

I've been waiting for severance season two for a while.

Kevin Schaefer:

And yeah, this is a show I.

Kevin Schaefer:

ut it because it premiered in:

Kevin Schaefer:

And then my Star Wars RPG group from Church, we're talking about it, not saying.

Kevin Schaefer:

They're like, oh, you got to watch this.

Kevin Schaefer:

So good.

Kevin Schaefer:

And it sounded like a really interesting concept.

Kevin Schaefer:

I love Adam that.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I want to check it out.

Kevin Schaefer:

And so, yeah, I'll give.

Kevin Schaefer:

Just as far as the initial.

Kevin Schaefer:

The overall concept behind this show is imagine a world where your work life is completely separate from your personal life.

Kevin Schaefer:

So when you go to work, you know nothing about your outside world.

Kevin Schaefer:

So you could go to your job at this office at the Lumen Corporation, and due to a severed operation that you volunteer for, where your work life, your work personality is separated physically from and everything from your personal life.

Kevin Schaefer:

So you would go to work, you would not know that you're married or have kids, anything about your personal life.

Kevin Schaefer:

Even, let's say, hypothetically, if your wife worked at Lumen as well, you would not know that you're married when you're at work.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, that's how.

Kevin Schaefer:

So it is these total separation.

Kevin Schaefer:

And.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then same goes for when you're out.

Kevin Schaefer:

So when you're in your personal life, you know nothing about what you do at work, and you don't know who your co workers are.

Kevin Schaefer:

So you can have your co workers, you know, let's see them as Neighbors or whatever, or see them in the real life outside work and then not know that you're working together.

Kevin Schaefer:

So the idea there is like.

Kevin Schaefer:

Because it builds off this concept of like, work life balance.

Kevin Schaefer:

And like, what if we did take that to.

Kevin Schaefer:

In the way of like, you know, the benefits of having that for your personal life, which you.

Kevin Schaefer:

They call, they call their personal ones Audis and the work ones.

Kevin Schaefer:

Any of the terms I use here.

Kevin Schaefer:

Oh, it's so cool.

Kevin Schaefer:

And.

Kevin Schaefer:

And so when you're an Audi, it's like, okay, on the one hand you never have to go to work, but the flip side is that when you're any, you know, nothing other than your life inside an office building.

Kevin Schaefer:

So it's both like, terrifying, appealing and.

Evan Garcia:

Right.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes.

Evan Garcia:

Right.

Evan Garcia:

But now my question is, is the.

Evan Garcia:

When you go to this job, is it voluntary?

Evan Garcia:

Like, so that like, like, did you apply for this job?

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

Or was this given to you?

Kevin Schaefer:

And that's the thing.

Kevin Schaefer:

So the employees do sign up for it.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, they know about, like, the Audis know about what severance is.

Kevin Schaefer:

And so they did volunteer.

Kevin Schaefer:

And so for instance, Adam Scott's character, Marcus the.

Kevin Schaefer:

We learned the reason he wanted to go through with this is because in his real life, his wife died in a car crash, and so he wanted to be able to separate himself from that while he's wearing.

Kevin Schaefer:

Exactly.

Kevin Schaefer:

And forget about that while he's at work.

Kevin Schaefer:

So you do volunteer.

Evan Garcia:

Right.

Kevin Schaefer:

But if an employee, if an innie wants to get out their Audi has to give them permission to.

Kevin Schaefer:

So they have this whole system where they have to like, send a video.

Kevin Schaefer:

And that's one of the really fascinating things is one of the other main characters played by Brit Lauer, who we meet in the pilot, and she's like, terrified because it's her first day of work and she has no idea what's going on.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, when you start as an indie, you don't understand anything and they have to explain everything to you.

Kevin Schaefer:

And she wants out, but her out for reasons, we learn at the end of season one, her Audi denies her the reason, so she's stuck there.

Kevin Schaefer:

And like, and she tries all these things to get out and can't.

Kevin Schaefer:

So it is.

Kevin Schaefer:

So to answer your question, it is both like, yes and no in terms of like autonomy they have.

Kevin Schaefer:

And that's the kind of fascinating and the moral and ethical dilemmas that stem from the Women Corporation and the severance procedure.

Kevin Schaefer:

So it raises all these issues there.

Kevin Schaefer:

But so season two just premiered.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't want to give too much away because A lot of things happen in season one.

Kevin Schaefer:

So for instance, like with Mark again missing that his wife died, there is a deeper level to that that I.

Kevin Schaefer:

That is revealed toward the end of the season that changes everything about his character.

Kevin Schaefer:

And same with Britt Lauer's character, Hallie, that she learned something about her Audi that changes her everything about her.

Kevin Schaefer:

And so season two kind of picks up where season one left off on a big cliffhanger.

Kevin Schaefer:

And it's now been a three year gap since we last saw the show.

Kevin Schaefer:

And so it's been a long wait, but so far it's been well worth it.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm really excited to see where it goes from here.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah, basically the main characters in the show started kind of a revolt against Lumen Corporation in season one, and now season two is continuing off that storyline.

Kevin Schaefer:

But what is happening so far is the corporation is apparently or seemingly trying to respond to the complaints of the people who led the characters who led the the rebellion in season one.

Kevin Schaefer:

So instead of just eliminating them, they're trying to adapt and make the experience of work at this corporation more satisfying for the Enies.

Kevin Schaefer:

So as such, yeah, without spoilers, the main characters do side decide to stay there.

Kevin Schaefer:

And that's where we're kind of at with season one with the premiere.

Kevin Schaefer:

But oh my gosh, it is such a fascinating show.

Kevin Schaefer:

There's.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, there's so much it raises again about just like work lives and corporate culture in the modern world and you know, what influence corporations have over us.

Kevin Schaefer:

And like you said, that kind of element of like freedom versus, you know, like what.

Kevin Schaefer:

What constitutes as freedom here.

Kevin Schaefer:

Because obviously there's a lot of criticism toward the Lumen Corporation during the severance procedure on the outside world.

Kevin Schaefer:

But for the characters who are in there, do they have a chance to get out?

Kevin Schaefer:

Do they not?

Kevin Schaefer:

And that's what I think it's delving more into.

Kevin Schaefer:

So it is a fantastic show.

Evan Garcia:

Sounds like a.

Evan Garcia:

Sounds like a episode of Shoot.

Evan Garcia:

Black Mirror Man.

Kevin Schaefer:

Very much so.

Kevin Schaefer:

A lot of that concept there.

Kevin Schaefer:

And it's also remarkably funny too.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, it's both like this kind of really mind bending sci fi drama and also has a lot of humor.

Kevin Schaefer:

Adam Scott, I think.

Evan Garcia:

Isn't Ben Stiller involved?

Evan Garcia:

Yes.

Kevin Schaefer:

So Ben Stiller helped really get it off the ground and is the main director, producer.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's created by a guy named Dan Ericson.

Kevin Schaefer:

So basically, years ago, Ben Stiller found the script after it was blacklisted, loved it, and contacted Dan Ericson.

Kevin Schaefer:

So the two of them are basically the Main showrunners.

Kevin Schaefer:

And Adam Scott is also a big creative force and to his producer.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yes, Ben Stiller directed most of season one and he's directing a lot of this season as well.

Kevin Schaefer:

And it's.

Kevin Schaefer:

I.

Kevin Schaefer:

I think it's one of his best works as a filmmaker, as a creative genus.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, I mean, he brings, like, he utilizes comedy roots.

Kevin Schaefer:

He just utilizes the storytelling techniques and really taps into, I mean, like David Lynch, Rest in peace, you know, like a lot of that just kind of like cerebral.

Kevin Schaefer:

Cerebral esoteric and TV and films of the past and make something just really mind bending and this great blend of drama, dark humor.

Kevin Schaefer:

Oh, it's so good.

Kevin Schaefer:

So it raises, you know, I get.

Kevin Schaefer:

I guess my question to you, is it knowing all that, like, do you think the.

Kevin Schaefer:

The idea, that idea of being able to completely separate your work and your personal lives is appealing in any way?

Evan Garcia:

Okay.

Evan Garcia:

Would I submit myself to that?

Evan Garcia:

No, I don't.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

But it is a very cool premise that I can see where you can have a lot of good stories come out of.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

A lot of intriguing, like.

Evan Garcia:

Like you find yourself in a pickle.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes.

Evan Garcia:

Kind of thing.

Evan Garcia:

Like, I could see that.

Evan Garcia:

I could see that.

Evan Garcia:

So I might bite the bullet and do the free trial thing.

Evan Garcia:

Whatever.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, right.

Kevin Schaefer:

See how it goes for seven days.

Kevin Schaefer:

If they.

Kevin Schaefer:

And if they.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

That's another thing.

Kevin Schaefer:

I wonder if they will bring that up as a part.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's like, like, could anyone try it and then get out?

Kevin Schaefer:

You know, I mean, because they say you can leave, but it's obviously a lot harder to leave than, you know, just like.

Kevin Schaefer:

Because again, there's the whole like any and Audis being separate, essentially people consciousness.

Kevin Schaefer:

So both have to be on the same terms.

Kevin Schaefer:

But like, it would be an interesting thing if someone could like do it for seven days automatically get out, and then kind of decide after that if they want to work at Lumen or not.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

But.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, but.

Kevin Schaefer:

So, yeah, Severance is one of my favorite shows right now.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm really excited to have it back.

Kevin Schaefer:

And now that I have apple again.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, all the time.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

So it's definitely recommending.

Kevin Schaefer:

And now that I have apple back, I'm gonna check out some more stuff on there.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, I was just waiting for this to come back before I resubscribed, but there's a lot of good stuff on Apple, so definitely recommend Severance.

Kevin Schaefer:

There's a lot to dissect in it, so I'm really excited to watch that week to week right now.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

All right, then I Guess we can talk about.

Evan Garcia:

Bring that up.

Kevin Schaefer:

Right on.

Evan Garcia:

Whoa.

Evan Garcia:

Good game.

Evan Garcia:

I didn't want to do me, but there we go.

Evan Garcia:

All right.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, I don't want to take too long on it because we kind of, we kind of touched on some things that I think were kind of.

Evan Garcia:

That Netflix was a pioneer in, and now they've kind of softened up in the sense of they are releasing these things in parts, which is kind of cool.

Evan Garcia:

Which is a.

Evan Garcia:

Interesting way to keep you coming to the platform, but still providing that, that cliffhanger type of stuff, which, which a season two, part A totally leaves off in, which was not expected.

Evan Garcia:

Like, my wife and I, we didn't know that, that there was only like what, like seven episodes and we saw them all in one night by mistake because we thought we were just, oh yeah, we'll watch a few now and then we'll watch some next week.

Evan Garcia:

We watched them the whole.

Evan Garcia:

We were complete.

Evan Garcia:

Completely sucked in.

Evan Garcia:

Like, we didn't go to bed till like four in the morning.

Evan Garcia:

We were like, wow.

Evan Garcia:

I, I didn't think that they could, that they could raise the stakes from, from the first season.

Evan Garcia:

And, and the commentary on like class and the government and the small people and what, and what lures you and what has, what has control of you and, and what do you give control over?

Evan Garcia:

Like, they, they fleshed that out so beautifully and with a little twist in there.

Evan Garcia:

So, yeah, I suggest it.

Evan Garcia:

And, and one thing I want to say is my kids, we are thinking about letting our 12 year old watch it.

Evan Garcia:

She, she found the premise interesting because there's a lot of memes about it on the YouTubes now.

Evan Garcia:

And my six year old is like, oh yeah, I know this, this and this, and this character.

Evan Garcia:

I'm like, what are you talking of?

Evan Garcia:

What, what is happening?

Evan Garcia:

How do you know about this?

Evan Garcia:

And they're like, oh yeah, when Thanos did this and that, I'm like, stop it.

Evan Garcia:

What?

Evan Garcia:

I'm like, okay, well, you're not watching it.

Evan Garcia:

You could watch it probably, but maybe.

Kevin Schaefer:

Start with Hunger Games and then go from there.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah, because it is like our.

Evan Garcia:

12 year old loved Hunger Games.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes.

Evan Garcia:

And you're right.

Evan Garcia:

That was a primer.

Evan Garcia:

That was, that was a primer for this.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, yeah.

Evan Garcia:

So, yeah, good stuff.

Evan Garcia:

Good stuff in Squid Game.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I watched a little bit of season one.

Kevin Schaefer:

I know this is like one thing I like.

Kevin Schaefer:

It is a great show.

Kevin Schaefer:

Don't get me wrong.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't know.

Kevin Schaefer:

What is it?

Kevin Schaefer:

Because, like, I watch a lot of dark stuff.

Kevin Schaefer:

Plenty Like, I watched a lot of light stuff.

Kevin Schaefer:

I was not dark.

Kevin Schaefer:

So like, I don't know what it is for me.

Kevin Schaefer:

I just like, I've never been able to get into not even like, watch dystopian stuff.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's specifically this kind of like.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like Hunger Games.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like this dystopian, like game to the death kind of like premise kind of thing like that.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't know what it about it is, whether it's wire.

Kevin Schaefer:

I just.

Kevin Schaefer:

Right, right.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, whatever.

Kevin Schaefer:

I just like never been able to really jump in.

Kevin Schaefer:

Even if it's really well done, really well, which I mean, this show was.

Kevin Schaefer:

But.

Kevin Schaefer:

But I did see some of season one.

Kevin Schaefer:

I guess my only question here is like, because I don't mind spoilers anything but like, is it completely new characters here or like they build on.

Evan Garcia:

For the most part.

Evan Garcia:

For the most part there is.

Kevin Schaefer:

Okay, so.

Kevin Schaefer:

Because like I remember the basic premise and everything, but like, does this kind of like expand on the World War or what's kind of the approach with this season?

Evan Garcia:

It brings in.

Evan Garcia:

It has the same themes but in a different fonts.

Evan Garcia:

Basically.

Evan Garcia:

Like, you know, you still have the same type of archetypical characters that the first season had.

Evan Garcia:

Like the, like the old man and the like annoying kind of a young person and stuff.

Evan Garcia:

You'd have that come back, but in.

Evan Garcia:

But with a twist.

Evan Garcia:

Like, there's a vlogger and his name is Thanos, and he's.

Evan Garcia:

And he's got his painted nails like the.

Evan Garcia:

Like all these stones.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, it's like so.

Evan Garcia:

So.

Evan Garcia:

So the stuff like that.

Evan Garcia:

And there's a twist where it's one of those twists where it wasn't in the first season, but there's a twist that.

Evan Garcia:

That the.

Evan Garcia:

That the audience knows.

Evan Garcia:

But.

Evan Garcia:

But.

Evan Garcia:

But the characters do not.

Kevin Schaefer:

Okay.

Evan Garcia:

So they play with that pretty well.

Kevin Schaefer:

Okay.

Evan Garcia:

That was a pretty cool twist.

Kevin Schaefer:

Nice.

Kevin Schaefer:

Nice.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

No, I don't.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, like, yeah, I mean, I remember how much people love the first season and like the creator sounds awesome.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, this really.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I mean, you know.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I mean dystopian stuff.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, that's so.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't know how people can relate to that today.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like.

Kevin Schaefer:

So.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Very relevant today.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

But, yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Awesome.

Kevin Schaefer:

So.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, what do you say?

Kevin Schaefer:

Would you say you have a preference for like.

Kevin Schaefer:

Did you like season one or this better?

Evan Garcia:

Oh, man.

Evan Garcia:

No, I would like season two.

Kevin Schaefer:

You do?

Kevin Schaefer:

Wow.

Evan Garcia:

Season two so far.

Evan Garcia:

Depends how part B comes out or whatever they are calling it.

Evan Garcia:

But I was just like, they.

Evan Garcia:

They hit the floor running with this season, I was like, okay, we are back.

Kevin Schaefer:

Awesome.

Kevin Schaefer:

That's good to know because I mean, sometimes when you have some bar set so high, especially if there's something really original and it can be really hard to do a follow up.

Kevin Schaefer:

So that's really cool.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

Awesome.

Kevin Schaefer:

Sweet.

Kevin Schaefer:

Well, check out Squid game.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then what else have we got on the radar today?

Evan Garcia:

I got the last slide.

Evan Garcia:

I have here.

Evan Garcia:

Is this news about Star Wars.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

So, okay, so Evan and I were talking right before we started recording.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, we're a little bit weary of any Star wars movie news.

Kevin Schaefer:

Not so much on the TV side.

Kevin Schaefer:

They've been pretty like, you know, if a show gets announced, it pretty much is going to happen.

Kevin Schaefer:

But with the movies, they've had a lot more delays and like, you know, announcements and then we don't really hear anything for a while.

Kevin Schaefer:

But I mean, regardless, like, the announcements are cool.

Kevin Schaefer:

And this one very much so.

Kevin Schaefer:

So apparently.

Kevin Schaefer:

Well, I'll let you take all the reins on this one.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

So the announcement is that Shawn Levy, it has a Star wars movie coming out.

Evan Garcia:

It's not officially confirmed, but it's probably gonna happen.

Evan Garcia:

But Lucasfilm has not said it and that is weird little limbo.

Evan Garcia:

But there's a few movies like this.

Evan Garcia:

But this news that Ryan Gos will be in this film, and I think that's cool news.

Evan Garcia:

What do you think about that?

Kevin Schaefer:

Oh, I mean, I love the combo.

Kevin Schaefer:

I think, you know, like, Sean Levy, I think is really evolved as filmmaker.

Kevin Schaefer:

Not that he was ever like bad or anything.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's just like, yeah, he made some really fun kind of like sort of like smaller blockbusters.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like Real Steel is a lot of fun.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, and then Free Guy was a lot of fun.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then.

Kevin Schaefer:

But then Deadpool show and Wolverine showed what he could really do with a big budget and I thought he nailed it there and it was just a great time.

Kevin Schaefer:

And, um, he did effects while he did fight scenes, while he did action and handled a big cast and everything.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I mean, I'm all for him doing a Star wars movie.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I think Ryan Gosling is like at the height of his career right now in terms of like, he's just nailing one.

Kevin Schaefer:

r movie episode at the end of:

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, me and Andy were talking about the Fall Guy, which was a blast last year.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then of course Barbie.

Kevin Schaefer:

And then his SNL episode last year was one of the highlights of that season.

Kevin Schaefer:

Oh my gosh.

Kevin Schaefer:

I showed my dad.

Kevin Schaefer:

My dad Did Beavis and Butt Head sketch just because, like, my dad was like, do I have to know anything about Beavis?

Kevin Schaefer:

And.

Kevin Schaefer:

But I was like, no, you'll just find this.

Kevin Schaefer:

He was laughing hysterically, like, you know, so, like, so I am all for God.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, and I mean, just, like, look at him.

Kevin Schaefer:

He could.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, even though we know nothing about what this movie would entail, I mean, Ryan Gosling could be a Jedi.

Kevin Schaefer:

He could be, you know, like a soldier or some kind.

Kevin Schaefer:

Whatever.

Kevin Schaefer:

There's a million ways they could go with this.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I am all for it.

Kevin Schaefer:

But, like, yeah, I think.

Kevin Schaefer:

But we were also.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, we were laughing at the fact, too, like, you and I saying that, you know, they have announced a lot of Star wars movies that haven't come to fruition.

Kevin Schaefer:

But at the same time, we were talking about how, like, we have an embarrassment of riches with the Star wars universe.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, yes, there is.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I get really annoyed at fans that just say, like, like, Disney ruined everything.

Kevin Schaefer:

Blah, blah.

Kevin Schaefer:

I'm like, okay, no one is telling you you have to watch everything, that every piece of Star wars media comes out.

Kevin Schaefer:

You're allowed to pick and choose, and you don't have to like everything.

Kevin Schaefer:

So if, like, the sequel trilogy isn't your thing, that's okay.

Kevin Schaefer:

There's also Mandalorian.

Kevin Schaefer:

There's also Andor.

Kevin Schaefer:

There's also Skeleton crew.

Kevin Schaefer:

You know, I mean, there's.

Kevin Schaefer:

There is an embarrassment of riches that for a long time, we had nothing.

Kevin Schaefer:

So just enjoy the fact that there is more Star wars content coming out and being developed, and that's okay.

Kevin Schaefer:

If every little bit of it is not your thing, you can still watch something else you can sell.

Kevin Schaefer:

But let's just enjoy the fact that we have this much Star wars to enjoy.

Evan Garcia:

Exactly.

Evan Garcia:

Exactly.

Evan Garcia:

As much as I don't like when a project goes.

Evan Garcia:

Goes to the wayside, I'm still, like, I check myself.

Evan Garcia:

You know, it's like, all right, we are still here.

Evan Garcia:

We still have everything else, and we still have other things that we don't know that.

Evan Garcia:

That are in the works.

Evan Garcia:

But as for the character, as for Ryan, I don't know.

Evan Garcia:

He gave me pause.

Evan Garcia:

I was just like, is he too good for Star Wars?

Evan Garcia:

You know, it's like, I think because I put him at the level of actor, like Tom Cruise, almost like.

Kevin Schaefer:

Right, right.

Evan Garcia:

It's like when.

Evan Garcia:

When.

Evan Garcia:

When he's in a film.

Evan Garcia:

That's his film.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yes.

Evan Garcia:

And I think when.

Evan Garcia:

I think when he was in the Barbie movie, that was a commentary on that.

Evan Garcia:

Exactly.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

On how he had to be submissive to that.

Kevin Schaefer:

Right.

Evan Garcia:

Because in.

Evan Garcia:

Because.

Evan Garcia:

Because in the Fall Guy and all his.

Evan Garcia:

And.

Evan Garcia:

And leaving in a La La Land, he was still the main character, basically.

Evan Garcia:

So I think.

Evan Garcia:

But not just the main character, but it's like, this is a Spike Lee joint.

Evan Garcia:

You know, it's like, it's.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, Gosling joint.

Evan Garcia:

Right.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

And.

Evan Garcia:

And I'm all for that because I liked it when.

Evan Garcia:

And this brings up.

Evan Garcia:

This brings up a change in how Star wars has been created, as in, like, it's just been George Lucas for.

Evan Garcia:

For almost 50 years and then.

Evan Garcia:

But now we're seeing these.

Evan Garcia:

These.

Evan Garcia:

These different voices coming in.

Evan Garcia:

And.

Evan Garcia:

And we've seen it through the writing and the.

Evan Garcia:

And the directing of the different shows, but we've never seen it, like, where the star takes the lead in the movie.

Evan Garcia:

Because.

Evan Garcia:

Because we had Solo with a Woody Harrelson, but I don't think he's that top tier.

Kevin Schaefer:

And even then, it's like, supporting character.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, you look at the front runners.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, like, the guy who played Hannah, that was like, his first.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, that was his first.

Kevin Schaefer:

You look at Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, I mean, Oscar Isaac's huge now, but, like.

Kevin Schaefer:

But when Force Awakens came out, it was like that was there for all three of them, like, their first big movie.

Kevin Schaefer:

So, yeah, it's a great point.

Kevin Schaefer:

It was.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's building, like.

Kevin Schaefer:

And that's how Star wars has always been, is like, you know, it was building characters for Mark Hamill and Gary Vechener, Harrison Ford, you know, so that's.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's a really great point.

Kevin Schaefer:

You, like, you don't expect, like.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, like, movie stars who are so synonymous, like, with, like, their identities to come and be a front leader for a Star wars movie.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

So I'm curious.

Evan Garcia:

I'm curious to see what Shawn Levy has in his.

Evan Garcia:

In his pocket, and I'm curious how this will fit, how.

Evan Garcia:

How he will play you into this.

Evan Garcia:

So, yeah, so, I mean.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, because we've got that.

Evan Garcia:

We've got.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, the other announced ones have been like, James Mangold is doing like, a.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like a Dawn of the Jedi, like, Jedi origin movie, which sounds awesome.

Kevin Schaefer:

The Ray movie, I think.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, still has a director attached to it.

Kevin Schaefer:

I heard another writer left, which disappoints me a little, because I really do want that movie.

Kevin Schaefer:

I didn't.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like.

Kevin Schaefer:

I have, like, a lot of mixed feelings about the sequel trilogy, but I really love Ray as a character, and I want that to kind of redeem Rise of Skywalker, especially if it's set years after.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I'm still holding out hope for that one.

Kevin Schaefer:

The Mandalorian and Grogu movie is definitely happening.

Kevin Schaefer:

That's supposed to be in theaters from John Havreau next year, and then it's kind of in that universe.

Kevin Schaefer:

You also have the Filoni one, which is essentially going to be heir to the Empire, I think.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, it's going to be a continuation of everything going on with soca, Metaloria.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

So we'll see.

Kevin Schaefer:

When they all.

Evan Garcia:

Squadron movie had some news, I think that.

Evan Garcia:

That had some news kind of recently.

Evan Garcia:

Completely dead, I think.

Evan Garcia:

So I was like, oh, okay, good.

Kevin Schaefer:

I will.

Kevin Schaefer:

I.

Kevin Schaefer:

Because I like, I.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, because I.

Kevin Schaefer:

I remember when it got announced and then it just kind of like.

Kevin Schaefer:

I think Patty Jenkins had left and then it like.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I wasn't sure if there was any development there.

Evan Garcia:

Wonder Woman.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

Okay.

Kevin Schaefer:

But, yeah, so we'll see what happens.

Kevin Schaefer:

But I would love time let me do a Star wars movie and Ryan Gosling, like, I mean, you got me.

Kevin Schaefer:

It'd be like a heist movie.

Kevin Schaefer:

It could be actually.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, there's a lot of ways they could go with it.

Kevin Schaefer:

So over the Taika Waititi one still.

Kevin Schaefer:

They also got announced a long time ago.

Kevin Schaefer:

I don't know if that's.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, yeah.

Evan Garcia:

I.

Evan Garcia:

That's the one that I'm like, that's probably not.

Evan Garcia:

Probably not happening now.

Evan Garcia:

But bringing it back.

Evan Garcia:

Doing a callback to what we were talking about before, I think.

Evan Garcia:

Well, what we talked about with DC and the Marvel, one being more journeyman director and the other one being more a tour director.

Evan Garcia:

I think what the fandom is struggling with, like, with the skeleton crew and the.

Evan Garcia:

And the acolyte shows of, is that we are seeing them both one franchise, we are seeing directors trying to make a statement, which is completely fine.

Evan Garcia:

And then we are also seeing the directors that are trying to.

Evan Garcia:

Are trying to.

Evan Garcia:

Trying to add to the world without.

Evan Garcia:

Without leaving that much of a market.

Kevin Schaefer:

Right.

Kevin Schaefer:

You know what I mean?

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, exactly.

Evan Garcia:

And.

Evan Garcia:

And I think where the whole consternation with the fandom is, we're seeing the.

Evan Garcia:

Both playing out together.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah.

Evan Garcia:

Where.

Evan Garcia:

Where.

Evan Garcia:

I think.

Evan Garcia:

Yeah, that.

Evan Garcia:

That kind of just hit me now.

Evan Garcia:

It's like, that's probably why a lot of fans are so hesitant to like some of this stuff.

Evan Garcia:

It's not.

Evan Garcia:

It's not one cohesive flow like it used to.

Kevin Schaefer:

And I mean, I think there's pros and cons to that.

Kevin Schaefer:

But I also like the idea of, you know, tap into the fact that it is a universe and you can get different stories.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, we can move.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, because I don't want to have just the Skywalker saga forever.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like, I mean, but like, I like different stories and different styles and different directors and storytellers come in and do their own thing.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I, I kind of like do like that aspect that you can have sort of a main ongoing storyline and then you can have all these separate ones and explore separate eras because, yeah, Star wars is in an entire galaxy and you have so many possibilities.

Kevin Schaefer:

So I want to explore that more right up.

Kevin Schaefer:

Sweet.

Kevin Schaefer:

So we will see.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah, awesome.

Kevin Schaefer:

Well, that is all of the we got.

Kevin Schaefer:

You know, there's plenty more geek stuff going on.

Kevin Schaefer:

We'll have more on the next what's news.

Kevin Schaefer:

But that is our main topics.

Kevin Schaefer:

Evan, do you have a recommendation either based on anything we talk about or just anything really, even if it's not connected?

Evan Garcia:

I'm still waiting on strangers things the final season.

Evan Garcia:

Like, like, I was talking to one of my neighbors.

Evan Garcia:

They.

Evan Garcia:

They had never seen it.

Evan Garcia:

I said, dude, you should watch it.

Evan Garcia:

It's.

Evan Garcia:

It is one of those shows that are like, like, that's going to define a generation like, of shows.

Evan Garcia:

I think it's like before th.

Kevin Schaefer:

You know.

Kevin Schaefer:

Oh, I cannot wait.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, I still remember where.

Kevin Schaefer:

I mean, it's one of my favorite shows of all time.

Kevin Schaefer:

Like one of the few I've rewatched like multiple times and I cannot wait for a season five.

Kevin Schaefer:

And yeah, I'll probably do another rewatch before.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah, same cannot.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's just like, like, like you said, it really is a defining one because it just.

Kevin Schaefer:

And that's why John Levy was.

Kevin Schaefer:

He's directed a lot of episodes and has been a producer from the beginning.

Evan Garcia:

Did he really.

Kevin Schaefer:

He's a like, I forgot to even mention that when we're talking about it.

Kevin Schaefer:

So good segue.

Kevin Schaefer:

But yeah.

Kevin Schaefer:

And yeah, I want my recommendation.

Kevin Schaefer:

I want to go back to Spectacular Spider Man.

Kevin Schaefer:

If you've never seen that.

Kevin Schaefer:

It's a great animated series.

Kevin Schaefer:

Only lasted one season, but it is on Disney plus.

Kevin Schaefer:

So if you're interesting for more Spidey and it's in anticipation of the upcoming animated series, definitely check out that one one.

Kevin Schaefer:

But I want to thank all of you for tuning in today.

Kevin Schaefer:

And Will Rose will either, you know, take film himself frolicking through the snow.

Kevin Schaefer:

Or maybe if it gets his friend.

Kevin Schaefer:

See, after the tulips.

Kevin Schaefer:

Well, something will happen if we can get 50 likes on an episode.

Kevin Schaefer:

Episode?

Evan Garcia:

It's all his head.

Kevin Schaefer:

Yeah, he's probably watching, so.

Kevin Schaefer:

Hey, Evan said that one.

Kevin Schaefer:

I did not.

Kevin Schaefer:

About the Podcast

Systematic Geekology
Priests to the Geeks
This is not a trap! (Don't listen to Admiral Ackbar this time.) We are just some genuine geeks, hoping to explore some of our favorite content from a Christian lense that we all share. We will be focusing on the geek stuff - Star Wars, Marvel, LOTR, Harry Potter, etc. - but we will be asking questions like: "Do Clones have souls?" "Is Superman truly a Christ-figure?" or "Is it okay for Christians to watch horror films?"
